Children’s Dental Emergencies
Children are not excused from dental emergencies. In fact, they are more vulnerable compared to other age groups. Their carefree and innocent take on things makes them look at the world as big playground with nothing to hurt them.
It is, therefore, your job as parents to keep them safe without spoiling the fun. The Glenroy Dental Group is your trusted partner in keeping your child safe. We want a future of dazzling pearly whites and good oral health for young ones.
If your child experiences a dental emergency, you don’t have to worry. The Glenroy Dental Group guarantees same day emergency appointment, so your child can be free from pain.
First Aid Steps For Children’s Dental Emergencies
Children’s dental emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime. Preparation is very important in helping your child in emergencies. We have listed the most common dental emergencies experienced by children along with appropriate first aid steps, so you can be prepared when they happen.
#1. Toothache
In case of a toothache, here’s what you can do:
- Make sure that there is no food stuck in your child’s mouth. Assist your child in brushing his/her teeth and floss afterwards.
- Rinse your child’s mouth using antiseptic mouthwash or a salt-water solution (1/2 teaspoon to eight ounces of lukewarm water). Do this several times.
- Do not give aspirin to your child, nor put aspirin on the tooth or gums (this could cause chemical burn). To relieve pain, apply clove oil using a clean cotton swab.
- If there is swelling, apply a cold compress.
- Call your dentist immediately.
#2. Knocked Out Tooth
In case of a knocked out tooth, here’s what you can do:
- Rinse your child’s mouth.
- Locate and secure the knocked out tooth. Pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root.
- If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with clean water for no more than 10 seconds. Do this only if the tooth is dirty. Do not scrub, rub, or scrape the tooth.
- If it is a permanent tooth, reinsert it into position and let your child bite down gently into a piece of clean cloth to secure it in place.
- If it is a baby tooth, let your dentist do the re-implantation. Do not attempt to reinsert the tooth yourself because this can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath.
- Soak the tooth in saliva, milk, or saline solution on your way to the dentist.
- Go to your dentist within 30 minutes of the emergency.
#3. Broken Braces
In case of broken braces, here’s what you can do:
- Rinse your child’s mouth thoroughly to remove remaining broken pieces.
- Find a clean pencil and use the eraser end to gently move the offending wire in to place.
- Cover the edges with gauze or cotton on your way to the dentist.
- Call your dentist immediately.
#4. Bitten Tongue/ Lips
In case of bitten tongue/ lips, here’s what you can do:
- Rinse your child’s mouth with clean water.
- Press a clean absorbent material to the injured area (gauze, cloth or a tampon can also be used).
- Hold ice over injured area to reduce swelling, control blood flow, and relieve pain.
- Call your dentist immediately.
